Halloween Murder Mystery Puzzle (Free Printable, With Answer)
This Halloween murder mystery puzzle is a complete case you can print, solve with a pencil and check against a full answer. It takes about ten minutes for a first-timer and works just as well at a party table. No experience needed: the logic is the same as in how to solve a murder mystery grid, and every clue you need is on the page.
The case: Murder at the Masquerade Cabaret
October 31st, 1929. The cabaret has swapped its velvet curtains for black crêpe, and everybody who matters is wearing a mask. Mario, the pizza chef hired to feed the crowd, slipped out of the kitchen just before midnight. When the band stopped for the costume contest, someone found him slumped against the bar, his paper mask still on.
The manager locked the doors at once. Four guests had been seen in the back rooms during the interval:
- Lola, the dancer, still in her feathers between two numbers;
- Dante, the rival, who had been feuding with Mario all evening over who would run the late-night trade;
- Sal, the right-hand man, who likes a room to himself;
- Nico, the nephew, who came dressed as a ghost and spent the night near the dressing rooms.
The floor plan of the back rooms is below, with every piece of furniture in place. One of the four was alone with Mario. Your job is to work out who.
Lolathe Dancer
Dantethe Rival
Mariothe Pizza ChefVictim
Salthe Right-Hand Man
Nicothe Nephew
How to play in 60 seconds
Place all five people on the plan, the victim included. Three rules:
- One person per row and one per column.
- Every clue is true. "Next to" means sharing a side inside the same room: a wall breaks contact, and corners do not count.
- The killer is the only suspect in the victim's room.
You can stand on chairs, benches and stools. Tables, desks, counters and cabinets block their square. If you want the long version, read the rules in one minute.
The printable grid (PDF)
The PDF has the plan, the people, the clues and the rules on one page, with the answer on the last page. Pick the paper size you use:

Murder at the Masquerade Cabaret
The Cabaret · Rookie · 5 × 5
Place: put down the chosen person's pawn.
Lola · the Dancer
She was in the leftmost column.
Pick a person, then tap a square on the floor plan.
“Next to”: a square that touches by a side, in the same room. Corners don't count, and a wall always breaks contact.
The clues
- Lola is in the leftmost column.
- Dante's row is higher than Sal's.
- Dante is on a stool.
- Mario is not in the same room as Sal.
- Mario is not next to any table.
- Sal is the only person in his room.
- Sal touches Nico diagonally (corner to corner).
- Sal is in the cloakroom.
- Nico is not in the cloakroom.
- Nico is in the dressing rooms.
Hints (spoiler-free, progressive)
Open them one at a time. The first one gives away no position.
Hint 1
Two clues about Nico narrow him down to a single row of the plan. Start with him, then look at who must touch him diagonally.
Hint 2
Sal is in the cloakroom and touches Nico corner to corner. From the bottom row, only one cloakroom square fits, whichever of Nico's squares is right.
Hint 3
Lola owns the leftmost column, so Nico cannot use it. Once Nico is placed, only two columns remain for Dante and Mario, and Dante's stool settles who takes which.
Full solution, step by step
Show the full solution
- Nico. He is in the dressing rooms, which only occupy the bottom row. The cabinet blocks the middle square, so Nico is in row 5, column 1 or row 5, column 3.
- Sal. He is in the cloakroom (rows 3 and 4, columns 1 to 3) and touches Nico, who is in row 5, corner to corner, so Sal is in row 4. Row 4, column 1 is a counter. Row 4, column 3 only touches row 5 diagonally at columns 2 and 4, where Nico cannot be. Sal is in row 4, column 2, which touches both of Nico's possible squares.
- Nico, again. Lola is in the leftmost column, and only one person fits per column, so Nico cannot be in column 1. Nico is in row 5, column 3.
- Columns for Dante and Mario. Columns 1, 2 and 3 now belong to Lola, Sal and Nico. Dante and Mario share columns 4 and 5, which are entirely in the bar. Dante stands on a stool, and both stools are in column 5: Dante is in column 5, Mario in column 4.
- Mario. Rows 4 and 5 are taken, so Mario is in rows 1 to 3 of column 4. Row 1, column 4 is a table. Row 2, column 4 sits right next to that table, and Mario is not next to any table. Mario lies in row 3, column 4.
- Dante and Lola. Dante's stools are in rows 2 and 3; row 3 is Mario's, so Dante is on the stool in row 2, column 5. Lola takes the last free row: row 1, column 1, in the manager's office.
The verdict. Mario lies in the bar. Who else is in the bar? Only Dante. Sal kept the cloakroom to himself, as promised, Nico never left the dressing rooms, and Lola was in the office. Dante, the rival, was alone with Mario: he is the killer.
Culprit: Dante. The only suspect in the bar, with Mario.
Hosting it at a Halloween party
The case is short enough to play between two party games, and it gets livelier in teams.
- Print one sheet per team of two to four players, plus a spare. The answer page goes face down on the host's table.
- Read the story aloud first, in costume if you can, then start a ten-minute timer.
- Allow one question per team to the host, answered only with "yes" or "no" about the rules, never about positions.
- Reveal in style. Teams name the killer and explain one step of their reasoning. The first correct explanation wins.
- Keep it friendly for all ages. There is no gore in the story or on the plan: the body is "slumped against the bar", nothing more.
